Bossy Boots is not your typical bossa nova - it has neither the elevator music associations nor the studied coolness of the more self-conscious end of the genre. Instead it arrives with confident Latin funk energy and a fretless bass that is, as described, buttery-smooth in the way that only a well-played fretless bass can be. Jazzy drums, funky organ, and jaunty electric piano fill out the arrangement with warm character, but the star of the show is the cuíca - the Brazilian friction drum whose extraordinary squeaking, talking sound gives the piece its distinctive personality and its name. Once heard, a cuíca is impossible to unhear, and this track is built around the pleasure of that.
