Description

Rome and Athens had religions built around power, hierarchy, and divine favor toward the strong. The gods of Greece and Rome were essentially aristocrats — vain, competitive, and largely indifferent to human suffering. Virtue in these traditions was tied to honor, strength, and civic glory. The poor were poor because fortune or the gods had abandoned them. Charity existed but was practiced mostly as a form of public display by the wealthy — generosity as status symbol, not moral obligation. Slaves were simply property. Equality was not a spiritual concept; the social hierarchy was considered natural and even divinely ordained.

Jesus inverted almost every one of these values. The poor were not abandoned by God — they were closest to God. "Blessed are the poor in spirit" and "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven" were genuinely radical statements in their time. Jesus touched lepers, spoke to women as equals, praised the faith of Roman soldiers and Samaritan outcasts, and told his followers that how they treated "the least of these" was how they treated God himself. Compassion was not optional or performative — it was the entire point.

In short, the pagan traditions largely blessed the powerful. Jesus specifically and repeatedly blessed everyone the powerful had discarded.
