He was never very clever, and never very brave,
But he always says “Yes, sir!” because he is afraid
No training for the job, no talent for the task,
Just a “Yes, sir!” for everything the old geezer asks
Because that old geezer gave him everything and can take it all away.
Every tyrant needs his cowards
The power hungry fools
Who always say: “Yes Sir!”
As loyal Geezer tools
Oh, the most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no,
The most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no.
A loyal idiot is made a general, a young zealot made a judge,
So many delicious positions for that old geezer to fill
And so many people ready to open their mouth for his drill
Every tyrant needs his cowards
The power hungry fools
Who always say: “Yes Sir!”
As loyal Geezer tools
Oh, the most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no,
The most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no.
Bridge (slow, almost spoken, the bell tolling)
Europe, nineteen-forty, and the trains ran on the hour,
Staffed by ordinary men who always obeyed power.
Not monsters from a storybook, but ordinary people with tidy desks,
Who stamped the forms and kept the schedules, and who always said YES!
yes! Yes! Oh, yes sir! I will carry out your orders.
I will do whatever you say
Because, I don’t want you to take my job away
I know I am not qualified, but I am loyal to you, sir!
And the only thing that matters, is my loyalty to my geezer.
Every tyrant needs his cowards
The power hungry fools
Who always say: “Yes Sir!”
As loyal Geezer tools
Oh, the most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no,
And the bravest thing there ever was is one small word: “No.”
Not a shout, not a revolution, just a refusal to adore,
For a tyrant’s only power is the “yes” of the many, and no more.
The most dangerous man is the man who cannot say no.
Every tyrant needs his cowards
The power hungry fools
Who always say: “Yes Sir!”
