From the corner of 41st Avenue and Main Street in Flushing, Queens, comes Uppertiers: the home recording project of mercurial mastermind Joe Sidney.
Formed in 2007, Uppertiers has been Sidney’s longtime songwriting vehicle. On “High in Friends Places” - the group’s first release since 2015 - Sidney radically reinvented their sound. Eschewing their standard garage band instrumentation, Sidney opted instead to utilize low-grade keyboards, a madcap approach to sampling, and his trusty digital eight-track recorder. The result is chaotic, electronic collage-punk: imported Casio beats, riffs and beats stolen from Uppertiers’ own back catalog, and an absolute unwillingness to cede ground to any one style or genre.
Joe Sidney’s stubborn insistence on total DIY freedom (he’s still never stepped foot in a recording studio) allows for a singular, idiosyncratic vision to shine through. The primitive drum machine punk of “Report to the Floor” and “Shopping Song” betray a heavy influence from Le Tigre, while “Crazy Talk” and “Digame” are some kind of bit-crushed dancehall.
Careening through nine tracks in 25 minutes, “Friends in High Places” is as sui generis as punk gets. It's out on streaming on November 5th, 2021, with a short run of cassettes to follow.
