The lyrics of "Christmas in Hell" have been used to create three individual songs, each with a very different basic mood. They all have a subtitle to distinguish them. "Christmas in Hell (Chistmas on Earth)" is a dreamy, seamingly carefree "girlie" version. An innoncent voices sings about the horrors of Christmas.
The song describes the disquieting feeling that creeps over many families at Christmas. They come together ‘out of tradition’, but in reality they have grown apart and toxic relationships spoil the celebration. Instead of spending a nice evening with the family, the worst character traits of the people dominate, the so-called “Seven (im)mortal Sins”: pride, sloth, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and greed instead of love, trust, compassion and charity. A hellish Christmas scenario, as the biblical hell could not imagine it to be worse year after year.
And the angel said unto them
Fear not for behold
I bring you good tidings of great joy
Which shall be to all people
For unto you is born this day
in the city of David a Savior
Which is Christ the Lord
The family's gathered in contempt and despair
Only hatred and envy there's no love in the air
No tinsel no songs no holly or cheer
Is Christmas in Hell worse than Christmas right here
No angels no stars no holy night
Only shadows and fears far from holiday lights
Down down down
Into the devil's pit we go
It's Christmas on Earth
And Hell celebrates it too
No stockings are hung no mistletoe to kiss
Only twisted pleasure in the serpent's hiss
The gifts are the chains the bows are the flames
We're celebrating sin we're playing hell's games
No peace on Earth no goodwill to men
Just the echoes of suff'ring again and again
No reindeer no snow no festive delight
Just sinners in torment lost to the night
Down down down
Into the devil's pit we go
It's Christmas on Earth
And Hell celebrates it too
It's pride and sloth and lust and envy and gluttony and wrath and greed
The seven immortal sins are all we need
It's pride and sloth and lust and envy and gluttony and wrath and greed
The seven immortal sins are all we need
No angels no stars no holy night
Only shadows and fears far from holiday lights
No tinsel no songs no holly or cheer
Is Christmas in Hell worse than Christmas right here
