Some festivalgoers hid for hours as Hamas hunted them. In addition to those festivalgoers killed and injured, militants took an unknown number of hostages, and the details regarding their whereabouts and condition are not publicly known. It is now considered the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas militants crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip and carried out a massacre of civilians at the "Supernova Sukkot Gathering" music festival. The event was an open-air psychedelic trance festival, arranged to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, and was situated near the Re'im kibbutz. This attack was part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which started the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. At least 260 festivalgoers were killed, and a greater number of people were injured. The incident was the biggest terror attack in the history of Israel.

The events began around 7 a.m. when a siren warned of an incoming rocket attack, prompting festivalgoers to flee. Subsequently, armed militants, dressed in military attire and using motorcycles, trucks and paragliders, surrounded the festival grounds and indiscriminately fired on individuals attempting to escape. Attendees seeking refuge in nearby locations, such as bomb shelters, bushes, and orchards, were killed while in hiding. Those who reached the road and parking were trapped in a traffic jam as militants fired at vehicles. The militants executed some wounded individuals at point-blank range as they crouched on the ground.

On the same day, Hamas militants conducted a series of massacres in nearby communities, killing hundreds of other Israeli civilians.
