Rep. Barbara Lee faced death threats, insults and hate mail after she voted against a broad authorization used to carry out the war in Afghanistan.

The House vote was 420 to 1. The Senate vote was 98 to 0.

Twenty years, countless lives and more than a trillion dollars later, the longest conflict in U.S. history, many are looking anew at Lee’s lone vote against the measure that gave the president nearly unlimited power to wage war.

She was right. She was brave.
