I and Teitlebaum each took this title and wrote out separately our own lyrics. Afterwards, I combined all the lyrics into a single song.
This is about, well, the "Man".
He controls our lives and our destiny, and he does with us as he pleases, but eventually we cannot bear it any longer and we break away to become... our own drivers.
In the original lyrics, the line was "I didn't want to but I tried"
He sits in his seat with power of the wheel
His foot on the metal thing which isn't a big deal
He nodded and laughed
Threw his head back
And he took off
This driver drove my family all across the state
He hid us in a cabin and used my arm for bait
He fed us the leftovers
The dog was satified
I turned and looked up
I didn't want to but I cried
Sitting in the back seat of your wagon
Wondering where everybody's going
Is there a party in the streets?
How can there be a party in this heat?
Say who are you driver?
Where are you taking me?
Say where are we all headed driver?
Driver of my scene
Say who is the driver
Of this wagon speeding down this highway oh so fast
Why can't you just slow down so we can see all the sights
Come on look
The grass it is so green
Ooh
The dog barked away
Any strangers gone astray
With strangest feelings
Strange things today
In desperation I kicked down the door
I knocked out the beast and fed him some more
Jumping out the back door
I am fearing
Drive, take your cargo where you want
And I'll take mine somewhere else
Oh driver
Oh my driver
Look at the sky
It is so blue
Look at the ocean waves
I left, now I am riding in a limosine
With passangers in the back seat.
Say who are you driver?
Where are you taking me?
Say where are we all headed driver?
It's a wonder
It's strange
Why can't he drive straight again?
