Swing & Bebop Jazz, Vol. 4 Album

Nine tracks closing out the swing series: six swing cuts and three ragtime piano pieces. The swing six are deliberately close to one another — major keys, tempos between a hundred and eighteen and a hundred and thirty-six, all mixed flat — so what separates them is small and specific. One has the drums pulled further back than the rest. One holds the narrowest dynamic range in the album. One is the only minor key here. One is the longest, with real weight behind the kit.

The three rags are shorter and quite different from each other: the briefest and most modest, the most dynamic and cheerful, and a fast stride workout mixed dark. None of them uses a drum kit at all.
