Eleven late-hours tracks split three ways: four Hammond organ trio cuts, five nu-jazz pieces built on electronic drums, and two muted-trumpet sets. The number that shapes the whole record is the running time of Nu Jazz Coffee Shop — seven minutes fifty-nine, two and a half times longer than anything else here and the longest single track released under this name. It sits fourth on purpose: everything before it is a three-minute bed, and everything after it returns to that length. The organ four are the warmest thing on the album, drawbars and a walking bass line with no synthesis anywhere in the mix, running between ninety-nine and a hundred and twelve beats per minute. The nu-jazz five swap the trio for programmed drums and sit lower, from eighty-six to a hundred and sixty-two, and three of them are in D or A minor, which is why they cut together without a seam. The two muted-trumpet tracks are the outliers and are meant to be: one is the only piece here with no drum kit at all and no measurable tempo, two minutes fourteen in C major, and the closer is the shortest track on the album at two twenty-four.
