Nine tracks and nine different textures: modal jazz with the harmony left open, a muted trumpet ballad, nu jazz fusion, a programmed nu jazz groove, a Hammond organ trio, soul jazz, soul funk, a hard metallic soul cut and vibraphone. Seven of the nine are in a minor key. The tempo map is unusually clustered — ninety-six turns up three times, more than any other figure, and a hundred and twelve and ninety-two twice each, so eight of the nine sit inside a twenty-six-beat band with only the eighty-six-beat nu jazz groove below it. The pairing worth knowing about: the organ trio and the soul jazz cut share both a tempo and a key, ninety-six beats per minute in D minor. They are the only two tracks here that match on both, which makes them the pair that will cut together without a seam. At the other end of the album, the steel-toned soul piece is simultaneously the brightest recording here by a clear margin and the flattest in dynamic range, while the soul funk kitchen groove is the shortest track and the one with the widest dynamics — it lifts and settles where the other eight hold one level.
