Gypsy & Smooth Jazz, Vol. 1 Album

Six Hot Club guitar cuts and four slow saxophone pieces — two halves that share an album and almost nothing else. The gypsy six run between a hundred and twenty-nine and a hundred and fifty-two beats per minute; the saxophone four sit between eighty-six and ninety-nine. If you need drive, take the guitars: the fastest here is a hundred and fifty-two, and the hardest-hitting is, unusually, the slowest of the six. If you need room, take the horn: the darkest ballad runs at eighty-six with almost no percussion at all, and the longest track in the album is three minutes eight in an unusual key that gives it a wistful tint. One manouche cut has the softest percussive attack anywhere here and is the only one of the six that will sit under conversation rather than compete with it.
