Emotional Piano, Vol. 4 Album

Ten tracks, and the most varied of the four piano volumes. Six are in free time with no pulse at all; four have a measurable tempo, and two of those four are not piano-led — a vintage stride take and a short vinyl-crackle loop that between them cover ground the other eight never touch. Six of the ten are in a major key and four in a minor, and the structural oddity of the record is that no two of those four minor tracks share a key: D minor, A minor, C minor and G minor, one each. Two of the pieces are a deliberate pair — a reflection in A# major and its minor-key counterpart, the same writing with a heavier harmonic centre, sequenced back to back so an edit can turn from hope to loss without a change of voice. The extremes are wide for an album of this kind. The longest track runs three minutes twenty and the shortest eighty-six seconds; the quietest is a near-whisper that never once rises above its level, while another travels from barely audible to genuinely full and back inside two minutes nine. One piece is built almost entirely out of the silences between its phrases, and it closes the record.
