Emotional Piano, Vol. 3 Album

Ten solo piano pieces, and this is the most uniform record in the series by some distance: not one of the ten has a measurable tempo, and seven of them sit in the same key, A# major. Nine are major, one minor. Volume 1 of this series had a single track with a pulse in it; this one has none at all, which means the whole album can run end to end as one continuous bed without a single rhythmic edit point to work around. Three of the tracks are deliberate takes on one idea — the same Sad Piano Dream played three times, differing only in how even it stays, how wide the dynamics run and how long it lasts. They are sequenced together so an editor can pick the one that fits and keep the others in reserve: the first is the most level, the second the most expressive, the third the longest at three minutes nine. Around them the range is set by function rather than mood — a plain voiceover bed that is the flattest thing here and does nothing but sit under a voice, the only piece on the album whose harmony actually resolves, the only one that builds instead of holding still, the sparsest track and the single minor-key one, and a closing romantic take that is the quietest recording on the record.
