Cocktail Bar & Lounge Jazz, Vol. 3 Album

Eleven café tracks built around two groups and three one-offs: five modal jazz pieces, three muted-trumpet cuts, plus a daytime lounge track, an ambient hybrid and one purely functional restaurant bed. The number worth knowing before you pick anything: Muted Trumpet Coffee Shop runs at a hundred and sixty-two beats per minute — thirty-nine faster than the next quickest thing here, and the widest single-track outlier released under this name. Everything else sits between eighty-six and a hundred and twenty-three, or has no measurable tempo at all, which is true of three tracks. The modal five are the reason the album exists: the harmony holds still while the lines move across it, so none of them resolve the way a standard does, and none of them attract attention on a second pass. The muted-trumpet three go the other way — a single lead voice with immediate period character, from a hundred-and-twenty-three noir cut through the bright daytime take to a closer in free time with almost no rhythm section behind it. The longest track, at three minutes ten, is also the most deliberately eventless: pulseless, in F major, and written to loop through an entire evening of service without anyone noticing.
