Nikki Giovanni (1 Albums, 5 Tracks)

Nikki Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Over the past thirty years, her outspokenness, in her writing and in lectures, has brought the eyes of the world upon her. One of the most widely-read American poets, she prides herself on being "a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English." Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality. Always insisting on presenting the truth as she sees it, she has maintained a prominent place as a strong voice of the Black community. Her focus is on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others.

A true diva, Nikki Giovanni has merged the academic with the everyday. Colloquialisms, hip hop and the storytelling rhythm of her late grandmother are all ever present influences in her writing. She speaks the language of a contemporary African American woman, there is no mistaking. When talking about her work, she says, "I didn't want to become the kind of writer that was stilted or that used language in ways that could not be spoken. I use a very natural rhythm; I want my writing to sound like I talk" (1).

Her roots as a professional writer begin when she was only 25. Her self-published book of poetry titled Black Feeling Black Talk (1968) was written in reaction to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. An instant success, the book propelled Giovanni into a teaching career. Since then, she has written several books, including Love Poems (1997) - a book of poems dedicated to the memory of Tupac Shakur. Giovanni currently teaches at Virginia Tech and continues to be involved in the Black Arts Movements.

This 2002 recording was taken from Giovanni's visit to Clark College, located in Vancouver Washington.
