The French composer Luc Ferrari, a major explorer of the experimental borderland of musique concrète, instrumental music and hoerspiel and a true pioneer in the aesthetics of field recording, died in September 2005. In homage to Ferrari, this piece refers to his practice of “Musique anecdotique”: everyday sounds recorded within a given period of time are examined in order to realise their musical potential, while the chance encounter of fragments of dialogue might start narratives in the listener’s imagination without ever spelling them out.
The composition relies heavily on the inherent rhythmic and textural qualities of the source material. The field recordings are hardly ever processed, except through multi-track overlays and the means that were already at Ferrari’s disposition in his first “anecdotal” pieces from the 1960s: loop, fade, cut and splice.
The individual parts of the piece are connected through samples of guitar improvisations by Mathias Huber that were recorded and processed by Gerald Fiebig. A 29-minute version of this piece was first broadcast on Radio LORA (Munich) on 18 January, 2008.
