Biography
British cellist Colin Carr has appeared throughout the world as soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher. As a concerto soloist, Carr has performed with major orchestras, including Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Britain’s BBC Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras, and the orchestras of Chicago, Loas Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia and Montreal. He was awarded first prize in the prestigious Naumburg Competition and won Second Prize in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition. Carr’s uniquely natural and intimate playing is equally at home on the recital stage, and he tours major cities as a soloist each season. He frequently plays international chamber music festivals, and was a member of the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio and toured extensively with the group for twenty years. His recordings of the unaccompanied cello works of Kodaly, Britten, Crumb and Schuller and, heard here live, Bach, are available on GM Recordings and have been highly acclaimed. A cellist since the age of five, Carr studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School starting at age 8. He currently teaches at Stony Brook University in New York, and holds the post of “Musician in Residence” at St. John’s College Oxford, a position created expressly for him.
