The Paladin's Underworld takes you somewhere you probably should not go. A massive orchestral dark soundscape opens with strings that don't quite behave as strings normally do - warped, unsettled, and deeply ominous - while voices and piano add an eerie grandeur that suggests enormous scale and ancient wrongness. Big percussion and brass arrive to add power and threat, and the overall effect is of music for a place of terrible, incomprehensible power - somewhere a fallen Paladin has made his domain and invited exactly nobody. The piece maintains its atmosphere of overwhelming, otherworldly menace throughout without ever losing its compositional coherence.
