The Gatekeepers opens 2017 with a bang, as its original notes announce, and it absolutely does. Enormous distorted guitar chugs provide the hard rock foundation, pounding drums perform with the kind of physical authority that John Bonham established as the gold standard and very few have approached since, and driving orchestral lines weave through the arrangement with the thematic sweep of a Hollywood score that has decided to also be a metal record. The result is dark but simultaneously rousing - a combination that is more difficult to achieve than it sounds. The original notes observe, correctly, that this track makes anything instantly dramatic: a mug being placed on a table, a slow-motion sneeze. This is genuinely true and should be tested.
