The Count's Castle does not mess about. This is full-blooded orchestral horror with genuine ambition - deep, dark instrumentation creates a soundscape of genuine menace, clanging death knells toll with appropriate ceremony, and a cimbalom adds its exotic Eastern European character to give the whole thing a distinctly Transylvanian quality. The organ provides the kind of low, sustained dread that no other instrument quite manages, and the choir adds choral weight at the moments where things become most emphatically horrible. This is music for a haunted castle where danger lurks around every corner and the host has not been entirely honest about what he is.
