Elephant Waltz proceeds from a very specific comic premise: a very large mammal attempting ballroom dancing with complete confidence and absolutely no awareness that anything might be unusual about this. Brass instruments - tuba, trombone, flugelhorn, trumpet - carry the melodic content with the kind of methodical stomping precision that is simultaneously dignified and absurd, each note arriving exactly when expected yet somehow remaining gloriously comic in effect. Strings add orchestral texture, timpani provides the physical weight the subject demands, and the whole thing marches through its waltz paces with the unstoppable momentum of something that has decided it is graceful and sees no evidence to the contrary.
