Dark Flashes is built around something genuinely clever. The piano sample comes from public domain recordings of Bix Beiderbecke - specifically his pieces 'In the Dark' and 'Flashes', combined and rearranged to form the melodic backbone of the track. Ancient jazz meeting modern production, with warbling flute mellotrons adding vintage warmth, crackly vinyl texture giving the whole thing authentic age, and a deep contemporary bass and echoing percussion providing the modern counterpoint that makes the combination work so well. The result sits in the lo-fi jazz space but with more musical intelligence than the genre average - genuinely off-kilter and genuinely cool.
