Clowning Around is heavily inspired by Julius Fucik - the composer of 'Entrance of the Gladiators', which is that circus theme, yes you know the one - and wears that influence with cheerful transparency. A steam calliope provides the primary sonic identity, one of those big ones with the trumpets and drums rather than the modest fairground variety, and the arrangement adds trombone, tuba, glockenspiel, and sackbut to create a genuinely impressive ensemble of brass and percussion. The piece is mad, bombastic, and silly in the way that great circus music always is, and towards the end it introduces some rather unexpected key changes that will require hat-holding. This is deliberately and completely the point.
