All The Tea In China approaches its subject with genuine care and impressive range of authentic instrumentation. A shakuhachi flute provides the primary melodic voice with its breathy, evocative tone, a guzheng zither adds the characteristic plucked string colour of Chinese traditional music, and a Chinese erhu violin contributes expressive melodic lines of considerable beauty. Koto, gongs, tam-tams, and Taiko drums complete the percussion palette, and a touch of Chinese operatic percussion adds authentic flavour to the texture. The arrangement is more intimate than the companion piece Imperial China Cinematic - less orchestral, more traditional - and benefits from the restraint.
