This song inspired by: "The Preacher and the Slave" written by Joe Hill in 1911. Joe was a Swedish-born worker who migrated to the USA in 1902 and became a leader in Industrial Workers of the World (aka Wobblies).

His famous chorus goes: "You will eat, bye and bye In that glorious land above the sky Work and pray, live on hay You'll get pie in the sky when you die — that's a lie."

The common phrase "pie in the sky" for any unrealistic or empty promise comes directly from Joe Hill's song.
