Intelligence and Wisdom Are Different Things
Psychologist Robert Sternberg argues that intelligence measures how well you process information, but wisdom measures how well you apply it to real life decisions involving other people and long-term consequences. Smart people can be profoundly unwise — they've simply never developed that separate capacity.

Intelligence is a tool. Like any tool it can be used well or badly, applied in the right situation or the wrong one. A hammer is useless for tightening a screw. Being smart is no defense against being human — against desire, fear, ego, tribalism, and the ancient irrational machinery that drives most of what we actually do.

Dysrationalia: Keith Stanovich coined this term for the condition of being intelligent but chronically poor at rational thinking. IQ measures a narrow band of cognitive ability. It doesn't measure bias recognition, probabilistic thinking, or the ability to update beliefs when confronted with new evidence. Smart people are often better at rationalizing bad decisions than average people — they're more skilled at constructing elaborate justifications for what they wanted to do anyway.

Emotional Hijacking: Daniel Goleman's emotional intelligence research shows that under stress, fear, desire, or ego threat, the emotional brain overrides the rational brain regardless of IQ. A genius in love, in panic, in rage, or in lust is making decisions from the same ancient reptilian hardware as everyone else.







The Expertise Trap: Deep expertise in one area creates dangerous overconfidence in others. A brilliant physicist assumes his intelligence transfers to economics, relationships, or politics. It doesn't. The smarter you are in your domain the more invisible your blind spots become outside it.

Motivated Reasoning: Smart people are better at finding evidence for what they already believe. Intelligence becomes a tool for confirmation bias rather than truth-seeking. The smarter you are the more sophisticated your self-deception.

Social Pressure and Groupthink: Even brilliant people catastrophically defer to group consensus, authority, or social belonging. The desire to fit in, to not rock the boat, to maintain relationships — these override individual judgment regardless of intelligence. NASA engineers knew about the O-ring problem before Challenger. They didn't stop the launch.

Hubris: Success breeds the belief that your judgment is simply better than other people's across all domains. The more someone has been rewarded for being smart, the more they trust their instincts even when their instincts are wrong.
