Description

The “road to Jericho” story is most likely the Parable of the Good Samaritan, told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37).

The setup
A legal expert asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus points to the commandment to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. The man then asks, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus answers with this story.

The story

A man is traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho when robbers attack him, strip him, beat him, and leave him half dead on the road.
A priest comes along, sees him, and crosses to the other side of the road to avoid him.
A Levite (a temple assistant) does the same.
Then a Samaritan arrives. Samaritans were a despised group, often in conflict with Jews. He is moved with compassion, bandages the man’s wounds, puts him on his own animal, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care, promising to cover any additional costs.

The punchline
Jesus asks which of the three proved to be a neighbor to the victim. The legal expert can’t even bring himself to say “the Samaritan” and answers, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus replies, “Go and do likewise.”

Why it matters

It redefines “neighbor.” Neighbor isn’t about ethnicity, religion, or social tribe. It’s whoever is in need and whoever helps.
It’s a deliberate shock. The religious insiders fail, and the hated outsider is the hero.
The setting was real. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was about 17 miles, steep, winding, and notorious for bandits, so listeners would have found the scenario very plausible.
