Contact artistOriginally, the Confederacy had national flags like the “Stars and Bars,” but soldiers needed a clearer design in battle—so they used the now-famous red flag with a blue X and white stars, known as the Confederate battle flag. After the war ended in 1865, the flag didn’t disappear. It re-emerged decades later during the early 1900s and especially during the Civil Rights Movement, when some groups used it to symbolize Southern heritage, while others used it to oppose civil rights. Today, the flag is controversial: some view it as a symbol of regional pride and history, while many others see it as representing slavery, racism, and division tied to the Confederacy.
