The BSS Beat Library is a collection of original beats created by youth at the Broad Street Studio. The Broad Street Studio is a nonprofit arts organization located in Providence, RI. This library was created as a response to the current ASCAP, BMI and SESAC laws that prohibit copy written
music to be played or sampled by venues or other artist without having a license to do so. We believe that corporate control of music hurts our culture as a whole and hinders the free development of artistic expression. The "Blanket Licensing" scheme enforced by the major music licensing corporations does not directly benefit musicians or fans. Rather, it helps fund major labels that perpetuate homogenized music, marginalize independent labels, engage in pay-for-play radio and undermine musicians. While we do not agree with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC limitations, we do fully believe in protecting both the rights and works of all artists. All beats featured in the BSS Beat Library are licensed by producers in Creative Commons, a website that enables artist to license their work for free and in such a way that is specific to their individual wants and needs. The BSS Beat Library is one of the many outlets available for youth at the Broad Street Studio to create, present, sell and gain recognition for their work.
