Biography

LR Friberg is a Swedish composer, mastering engineer and narrative artist whose work blends mathematical structure with emotional storytelling. Her music moves between ambient, Berlin School sequencing and synth-driven dance music, exploring the space between the meditative and the exuberant. Her compositions balance repetition, rhythmic interplay and carefully shaped development; the result is music that feels architectural yet human, precise, expressive and capable of unfolding like a landscape or bursting into motion.

Her creative process draws on rule-based mathematical systems, including cellular automata, Lindenmayer systems and strange attractors. Cellular automata use simple rules to describe how patterns evolve through local interactions, while Lindenmayer systems build increasingly complex structures through recursive rewriting. Strange attractors introduce nonlinear dynamics, tracing intricate, non-repeating paths within defined boundaries. Using custom-written tools, she translates these processes into musical structures, exploring how repetition, variation and unpredictability can shape rhythm, melody and form.

A significant part of Friberg's work unfolds within a speculative narrative universe running parallel to the music. At its center are five characters: Elin Holmgren, a college professor in Norrköping; Linn Alma Axelsson, an OSINT and cybersecurity specialist in Linköping; Trine Østgaard, a Norwegian glaciologist; Christopher J. Franklin, a Texan musician; and Fabian de Haan, a Dutch painter living in Cairo. They have never met, yet their lives begin to resonate in inexplicable ways. They experience each other's moods, glimpse unfamiliar environments and share fleeting, intrusive moments of impossible connection. Across Friberg's albums, this convergence gradually bleeds into the audio, transforming the music into a psychological map of the invisible threads binding the characters' lives together.

Friberg's practice extends into collaborative and interdisciplinary contexts, spanning sound installations, stage works and audiovisual projects. Recent work includes the collaborative piece "Floating for a Time", presented through the eight-channel UNPOP sound installation at Burning Man in 2024 and 2026. Her music has also featured in the theatrical production "In Full Color 2023" in New Jersey. Other collaborations include work with the international audiovisual collective uni.Sol_, presented as part of the SPARK program in Baltimore.
