Contact artistEast Berlin, in my childhood. I was walking in a dream, it was dark night, far too late for me to be outside in the city. In the bright light of the lanterns, I recognized I was near the wall. This near I never was before. It was very quiet, nobody except me. Walking along the cobblestone road, I found a gap. A small slot between two concrete segments, secured by some red and white barrieres, just big enough that I could slip through. I followed a small pathway between the barriers over wooden planks through the death strip. On the other side I reached the last wall, the big concrete one, on the west-side. Which I knew from TV and photographs. Behind this one will be the other side, the part of town I never entered, a secret, I was told about, which surely existed but… I never saw with my own eyes, never touched. I went on and as I stepped off the path between the barriers, to enter the other side of town, I saw only solid grey.
