Get to know the stories behind the new EP Stick With Me, Kid! by Forget the Whale

Stick With Me, Kid! is really a story about summertime.

A throwback to our summers in the 90s and early aughts, where going off to summer camp or on a backpacking trip promised all the adventure and excitement the world could offer. - Forget the Whale

1. Fortune Favors

The story begins with Fortune Favors, one of our more experimental pieces, promising a journey repeated over generations.

Our protagonist is pulled toward a vague destination by an almost Disney-like Greek chorus of tricksters and seemingly indomitable allegorical forces until she reaches the voice behind the curtain—the little nugget of wisdom from the genie in the lamp, the hopeful refrain that, indeed, "fortune favors the bold!" - Forget the Whale

2. Kinzie

Then, just like every summer story, someone catches your eye and intrigues you, filling you with the passion that makes you feel capable of anything.

Kinzie, actually a jingle we wrote for the eponymous barbecue sauce, embodies that spirit of fiery summer romance, full of fireworks and sparks because the candle's being lit at both ends. Summer is ephemeral, and so too are its affairs—roman candles that overwhelm the impressionable heart. - Forget the Whale

3. Run Out of Summer

Now, a good summer story isn't without its drama, and on that cue, in storms Run Out of Summer, a tale of frenemies—two characters so close their friction could cause combustion as much as scintillating sparks!

In this fun track, we channeled our most 90s sentiments, adding as many homages to the 'songs of summer' as we could remember. From DJ scratches to a hip-hop breakdown, a pinch of ska, and some in-your-face guitar, this tune dramatizes the flash-in-the-pan but oh-so-significant 'best friends forever' fellowship, forever immortalized as initials carved into a tree or handprints in the cement of a sidewalk. - Forget the Whale

4. Stay

But, like all good things, even summer has its end; Stay captures that Sunday evening, last day of summer camp melancholy.

With so many of our members having recently become parents, collaborating on the words of this ballad came easily. The song's sentiment explores the liminal space every parent feels while watching their beloved child grow up. On the one hand, you want your baby to grow, become independent, and no longer need your assistance; at the same time, how heartbreaking it is to leave that infancy behind, and to wish they could stay little forever! - Forget the Whale

The members of Forget the Whale excitedly gift the world with Stick With Me, Kid! in the hopes that one or more of these melodies does indeed, as the EP's title might suggest, stick with you! - Forget the Whale
