Obsolete electronics and thrift-store guitars

State Shirt of Los Angeles was recently interviewed on the Music Manumit talk 'cast. He works with sound for pay at his "real job" and—increasingly—his musical labor of love is also returning a profit. A former Oberheim EchoPlex Pro operator, he's grown ingrained with the Circular Labs Moebius software looper as of late because, "It's ridiculous what that thing can do."

State Shirt is currently engrossed in learning to trust and build upon his compositional instincts with more speedy efficiency. His most recent album, Life is Easy, an experiment in improvisational live-looping and hopeless desolation, was released at Bandcamp under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Int'l license, and is also available here at the FMA

Each song on the album was written and recorded live in one day—often starting out as an improvisation. Gently traveling from weird ambient swells, ghostly harmonies, funereal rhythms, freakish beatboxing, and disconcerting noises, Life is Easy takes you on a mournful march to the darkest corners of hopelessness.

"Portasoul" was written for Lost Hills, an upcoming State Shirt album to be released in Summer 2015.

Hunter-Gatherer Psych-Pop Magic on CJSW

Hunter-Gatherer at Republik Night Club for Sled Island. Photo by Nathan Ross.

Calgary has seen many bands come and go, but for many, there remains a special place on our iTunes playlist for psych-pop experimenters Hunter-Gatherer.

Taking the swirling cacophony of Animal Collective and channeling it through the fuzz of early-90's guitar pop, Hunter-Gatherer quickly amassed a devoted following, playing Sled Island and other high-profile gigs, before members went on to other projects (including The Cable-Knits, an outfit with a similar sound). On their sole release, a four song cassette from 2009, the band's pairing of dreamy vocals and spiky guitars laid the groundwork, along with Braids and Women, for many of Calgary's young indie bands (Gretchen, Faux Fur, et al). You might have to "hunt" for their tape, but once you find it, I "gather" you'll fall in love.

MP3 of the Day: Andy & Zeus, "MCMLXXXI Choir"

Here's a track to put you in the Monday zone. Andy & Zeus are two friends in a spacecraft, navigating the outer limits via analog synths. The Brooklyn-based duo have roots in Boston where Andy played in Astronaut with Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) and "Zeus played in Chas Mtn with Gary War.

Originally released by Electrick Gypsy Service Records & Tapes on the sold-out Tales of Power cassette, "MCMLXXXI Choir" has gone on to float the web as a free download. Its kosmische energy has fueled remixes by Duchess Leo, Double Entendre and A.B.B.M. The track can also be found on this month's massive release by BEKO-DSL featuring 100 artists including Alligator Indian, Excepter, Maps and Diagrams and many more.
