Classwar Karaoke Survey 0030 is published!

Classwar Karaoke is an online label primarily based around an ongoing series of quarterly surveys - in effect, largescale compilations - published online mainly through the Free Music Archive, on each of the last days of February, May, August and November. It hosts material culled from the experimental scene, including electro-acoustic, improv, free jazz, acusmatic, soundart, field recordings, cut-up, avant-rock, noise, ambient and sound poetry.

Classwar Karaoke was founded by Anthony Donovan in March 2008; with the first survey appearing a few months later. The label only truly came into it's own, however, when Jaan Patterson joined as co-curator later the same year. Concerted efforts to expand and professionalise the label ensued. Jaan Patterson founded suRRism-Phonoethics, as a platform for full-scale releases. Many crossovers in personnel and outlook were evident between these projects, and, after a two year hiatus, upon his return, Patterson invited Donovan to similarly co-curate at suRRism-Phonoethics. Between them, and via these two projects, Donovan and Patterson have, by now, released hundreds of pieces of music and short-films, attracting many tens-of-thousands of hits.

Included in the Classwar Karaoke and suRRism-Phonoethics roll-calls are internationally-recognised artits such as Bob Ostertag, Fred Frith, Rhys Chatham, Bryan Lewis Saunders, Leif Elggren, Lol Coxhill, Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, Geoff Leigh, Otomo Yoshihide, Terry Bozzio, Nate Young, Michael Giles, Keith Tippett, Jaap Blonk, Jochen Arbeit, Steve Beresford, Leafcutter John, Ludo Mich, Gino Robair and Zoviet*France, as well as an impressive array of lesser-known but equally innovative artists. Live gigs, mini-festivals and specialist multi-media releases have also featured, and physical releases, of limited edition CDRs and audio-tapes, are planned for the future.

New release on aReW from Richard Knight and Noise Research

aReW have released a new album by Richard Knight and Noise Research.

Richard Knight and Noise Research – Unified Theory (RW-033)

Richard Knight is a sonic/computational artist, usually performing with digital equipment and an emphasis on spectral ambiguity. Knight also utilises mixing desks as sound sources: a typically passive audio device subverted to become an expressive instrument. Output is derived from the tenuous area between feedback and feedforward – the hazy and perplexing cusp between order and chaos.

For this recording, both analogue and digital processes were used, combined as to blur the distinction.

Noise Research (aka UK sound manipulatist Ian Simpson) has adopted an uncompromising approach in both playing and performance which has led to his involvement as a performer with ‘The Frakture Big Band’ (Liverpool), Noise Club (Liverpool), Janx: The Gathering (Wirral), ‘Gnod’ (Manchester) Aht-N (Cumbria) & ‘Fonik’ (Warrington). He also actively organises and promotes performances in UK including the Pyramid Experimental Music Festival and Manchester based Electronic Organica Nights (co-organised with Richard).

Like Richard, Ian has also used both analogue & digital mediums to produce the sounds you hear on this project.

This is the first official collaboration between Richard & Ian although they have performed live together over the last couple of years. Further recording will take place this year which is to include additional musicians / artists.

I’m looking for any who wishes to review thisto get in touch (or just go ahead and review !)

Splatter Cushion - Pesticide Organica + Noise Research

This is a live collaboration from duo Pesticide Organica and Noise Research / Fonik (aka Ian Simpson).

Released by Electronic Musik you can download it for free here

The first of tonight's three presentations is billed as a new collaboration between Pesticide Organica, Fonik and Noise Research performing improvised avant electronica / concrete with processed reeds and found sound chaos. Fonik hit the MM radar last summer when they managed to be the most fucked up sounding thing at Dry Bar's not inappropriately named Fucked Up All Dayer; "flicking switches and twisting knobs, playing with oscillations to build an abstract sound-picture stripped of any melodic convention.". Tonight one half of the duo is doing much the same thing, although his source material here comes not from the inside of a physics lab but the natural world: birds shriek and water crashes, processed into something altogether more alien as his hands wander around a table containing what looks like the contents of the world's coolest shed. Meanwhile a second artist (I'm not sure who's Pesticide Organica and who's Noise Research) supplies additional layers from a laptop whilst a third adds occasional sax notes. As the piece progresses the ripples become swamp creatures, more layers are added and the sax gradually moves into free jazz territory. (Cath Aubergine)

Bacillus - Radio Mast ep

Radio Mast ep cover

Bacillus is Ian Simpson (electronics and tape edits)Bacillus Bacillus is the solo project of Ian Simpson, a UK based improviser, sound artist and composer. All the work realised under this project uses electronics and sound manipulation as its textural medium. Some of the works are improvised and some use a graphic or text scores as their basis. Many use found sounds and field recordings. Some of the original source material has come from Ians very first experiments with tapes and electronics in the 1980's. Although essentially a studio project there are occasional live performances. The Radio Mast ep was originally issued on 3" cdr in 2005 and is now beingmade available here with most of the other Electronic Musik releases.
