A Grind Apart: Ubasute Live on My Castle of Quiet

Wm. Berger / Tracy Widdess

The grind music I like, I really love, because as a genre, there is a rampant saminess; so I sit back and let bands like Psychic Limb, Ubasute, Agathocles, Cattle Decapitation and Pig Destroyer rise to the top by way of their own virtues.

Alex Caprio's distinctive and unpredictable shriek, Mike Marciano's artful, intricate Rickenbacker bass virtuosity, and Jeremy Suria's guitar work (equal parts technical, Steve Howe-midrangery, and thick, power-chord glue) all work thoroughly together to make the band a cut above the raging pack. Upon even deeper observation, Ubasute's lyrical content, and carefully chosen graphic imagery flaunt the more-easily-attained / co-opted genre conventions.

Jamaica-Queens-The World; Psychic Limb Live on My Castle of Quiet Pseudo-Finale

What makes a great grind band? Doing as much as you can in an average of 43 seconds' song duration, flexing those ferocious chops from all angles, and, though this may be hard to explain to someone whose ears are attuned to pop music and the traditional song form, a certain "catchiness," an anthemic propulsion that will make the listener/receiver want to propel oneself into the pit without a care for personal safety. Psychic Limb have all these qualities, in spades.

I've liked these guys from the second I heard them, they stand out mightily from the pack of late 2000s grind on bandcamp and elsewhere, and they make records that stand firmly amongst the classics of the genre. And yes, they can and do reproduce it all in person.

Gnaw, Prana Bindu, Sonic Suicide Squad, Capacities, Ubasute at the Stanhope House

The Stanhope House and MuteAnt Sounds Netlabel are planning an uncompromising night of experimental music, hardcore, and grind for the underground connoisseur. Here are a few artists from here on the Free Music Archive who will be performing at the event.

Gnaw (facebook) is a genre destroying journey, utilizing pounding percussion, factory noise, chordal slabs of guitar and bass, homemade electro-acoustic instruments and Dubin’s unique and legendary vocalizations. They're the brainchild of Alan Dubin (Old Lady Driver/Khanate), with members of Enos Slaughter and Ike Yard. The five-piece have been assaulting audiences in the US as well as Europe with live shows since 2009 and have just completed their second album, "Horrible Chamber" to be released on Seventh Rule Records in October, 2013.

Prana-Bindu (facebookwebsite) features members of The Hat City Intuitive, Mittimus & 76% Uncertain that freely improvise through space and time. Matt SekelTodd KnappGene Moore, Gene Janas, and John Howard (Hat City Intuitive/DC noise-rockers The Plums) are slated for performance.

Sonic Suicide Squad (bandcamp) were highly active from 2008-2010 releasing a slew of CDR's on such infamous labels as DC's Panic Research and Halifax's Snapped in Half; as well as a self released 7". The band brought their free jazz noise terror style on tour as the opening act for Acid Mothers Temple's 2009 US and Canada tour routing them 15,000 miles in 6 weeks. This is the first emergence of the Squad since the hiatus of 2010. Core members Sam Lohman (drums; Sheer Terror/Nimrod) and Vinnie Paternostro (tenor sax, tronics) will collab with Mike Graziano (bass; Earthly One).

Be a DJ for a day, be a DJ for forever!

Don't let the (wo)man keep you down! Express yourself on the Music Manumit Podcast!

Long time no talk, friends.  We've been a bit busy! I just started law school and Tom's band just put out an EP! That doesn't mean we haven't been rockin' you out on the Music Manumit Podcast though! We've been interviewing some of the best Creative Commons bands out there too. Thanks to Craig of the Open Metalcast for filling in a couple shows while I moved!

To show our appreciation for sticking with us during the lean months, we'd like to give you the chance to be a guest DJ! In order to be a guest DJ what you need to do is put together 20-30 minutes worth of music and get us the tracks like this:

"Song" by Artist (genre) - license - Website.

Make sure we have a link to download the song and a link to the bad website. As you can see in the tracks I've selected anything goes as far as length, genre and subject matter (assuming you don't break the 30 min rule).

If you don't want to be a DJ, but want us to hear your music (or just have a suggestion), put some tracks in our SoundCloud dropbox. If you are not the artist and you put something in our Dropbox, make sure we have all the information we need to attribute the artist properly! Also, note that we play only remixable music.  No -ND or All Rights Reserved stuff!

If you're in a band and are interested in being on the show, let us know.  We are always interested in hearing new music and learning about novel ways to distribute, collaborate and create music. The interview invitation is open to curators, netlabels and podcasters as well. Just make sure you are passionate about remixable Creative Commons music!

We look forward to getting back on track and uploading great music from David Rovics, The Freak Fandango Orchestra, Amity in Fame and tons of other artists!

Oh, and since I'm all lawyery* now:

We reserve the right to revoke the offer for an interview at any time. Music on the music only show will be played at the sole discretion of the Music Manumit Podcast. This is not a contract.  The podcast and any posts here are not legal advice.

*term of art, you wouldn't understand
