2018 Golden Festival Recordings Added to Free Music Archive

Friends, we are pleased to announce that the 2018 Golden Festival recordings collected by WFMU have been added to the archive! Nearly 45 recordings were collected at the event, and they are now available for free streaming and download to our users.

If you've never heard of the Golden Festival, you're not alone - but you're missing out! It's a fabulous, three-day-long affair in Brooklyn's Grand Prospect Hall, a celebration of Balkan traditional music and dance. Featuring musicians from many corners of the world, instruments that have been used since antiquity, and unique vocal techniques, this is truly a special event. Fortunately, every year since the Free Music Archive began in 2009, there have been recordings from the Golden Festival added to the collection.

After a few years, the Golden Festival was granted its own Curator page, since the contributions associated with it are nearing the 1,000 mark! Listen to this teaser playlist we've curated, or dive into the whole collection and explore for yourself!

New Curator Spotlight: Golden Festival

Golden Festival photo by Oresti Tsonopoulos, via flickr.

The Zlatne Uste Golden Festival is a beloved annual music festival in Brooklyn, NY. Though portions of it are broadcast live on WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob W, much more is recorded and added to the FMA. Just this year, more than 30 performances were added to the archive - no small feat! There is Swedish folk dance music, overtone singing from Georgia (the country), Balkan brass, accordion solos, ancient instrument ensembles, and much more!

We are pleased to announce that the Golden Festival recordings are all being added to its own curator page now - so if you're looking for a Balkan Folk Fix, you can find it, reliably, here: http://freemusicarchive.org/curator/Golden_Festival/

Thanks to all our on-site and online volunteers, as well as WFMU, for helping make this collection possible.

Highlights from the 2016 Zlatne Uste Golden Festival

Bringing more than 60 musical groups to multiple stages (and dance floors), the Zlatne Uste Golden Festival has become a longstanding tradition! For more than 30 years, the Golden Festival has brought folk singers and dancers, brass bands, acoustic and electric bands together for two raucous nights a year.

This playlist is to give you a taste of the Fest's offerings -- and in fact we haven't even uploaded all of our recorded sessions yet -- but it's too good to keep under wraps!

If this can't sate your need for Balkan, Roma and eastern European sounds, feel free to explore our collections from previous years, dating back to 2009, or just watch the highlight reel from the event below!

Brooklyn's legendary Balkan and East European music and dance blowout is this weekend! Golden Fest is a massive two night gathering of musicians, folk dance enthusiasts and fans held at the spectacular Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn's South Slope. The festival kicks off with a multi-band dance party on Friday night January 16th. Then for the big event on Saturday night January 17th, some seventy bands will perform on four stages from 6 pm until the wee hours. WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise will be broadcasting live from Golden Fest on Saturday, and recently shared some favorites from last year

Here is some footage from last year's festival:

Balkan Brass & Beyond: 14 Live Performances from the 2013 Golden Festival

For the fifth year, WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise brought us a live broadcast from the massive annual Balkan and Eastern European music and dance bacchanal, the Zlatne Uste Golden Festival. We present here 14 different artists who performed this year, who are performing everything from Bulgarian dance staples, to music from the Golden Age of Egyptian Cinema, to traditional polyphonic acappella folk from Georgia.

Black Sea Hotel is the Brooklyn-based vocal quartet of Corinna, Joy, Sarah and Willa. Their set from last year included traditional songs learned under a plum tree in Bulgaria, but with their own distinct twists and arrangements, since many of the songs were originally sung by larger choirs.

Brazda is a New York-based Balkan band that plays fresh arrangements of traditional repertoire from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, and beyond.

Supruli is a Georgian choir directed by Carl Linich (also of Tenores de Aterúe). Its members have studied in Georgia -- listen and hear why polyphonic singing is so captivating to music scholars.

Yale Women's Slavic Chorus performs songs from Macedonia, Russia, Georgia, and Bulgaria.

Zikrayat, who specialize in Egyptian film music's golden era, accompanied by live dancing on stage at the Golden Festival for this rendition of the song "Tahey" by an unknown composer whose song now lives on.

If this trove doesn't satisfy your Balkan and Eastern European jams fix until the festival returns in next January, be sure to explore our collections from 201220112010 & 2009.
