Dustin Wong solo guitar magic live on WFMU

After fluttering across the fretboard live on WFMU in 2010, Dustin Wong made a return visit to LizB's radio show this Monday for a live set of looped solo guitar magic.

Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads, the 2xLP follow-up to 2010's 2xLP Infinite Love, comes out next Tuesday on Thrill Jockey. The music video for "Diagonally Talking Echoes" is below, and we've excerpted the live session version for you to download and share. First, enjoy a couple live takes of songs that won't be on the album: "Chocolate Dentist" is a brand new composition from the future, while the studio version of "Liberal Christian Youth Ministry" is hot of the virtual press at the Deathbomb Arc Digital Singles Club.

As a founding member of Baltimore art/noise-makers Ponytail and the original Ecstatic Sunshine guitar duo, Dustin Wong is sculpting new forms with intricate, processed guitar. It's an especially fun sound to follow as it is being created live. There's a great video from Newtown Radio.

If you're in the Brooklyn area, Dustin Wong plays tonight at Roulette, and the Dreams Say... record release show is Friday Feb 24th at multimedia space La Sala, with Lichens and Highlife.

Meanwhile, there are a few days left in Dustin's "Say Your Dream, Create a Sound" project. Dustin Wong has been working to soundtrack your dreams. The dropbox for your dream audio narrative submissions is still live though the deadline's around the corner -- the tracks will be available starting on Feb 20th.

March On FMA & WFMU (Mix) // Favorite FMA MP3?

photo by me. dunno who made the fireworks artwork

What is your favorite mp3 on the FMA? I realize that's not an easy question -- I like pretty much every track I've heard here among the 33,000. But this mix includes a freeform dozen of my 450+ "Favorites": MWE's 'Turkish Metal / Balkan Brass', Raleigh Moncrief, Thick Business, Zoë Keating, FMA hero Lucky Dragons, Karl Blau the super Northwesterner and member of Earth, Dustin Wong formerly of Ponytail, Rafter, Bay Of Pigs, and The Paparazzi...

The road songs by Kenneth Higney and U Can Unlearn Guitar are also available on the premium I've compiled as a thank you gift for people who donate to WFMU during my marathon show this Thursday.

The premium's titled ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP, and it comes in three MP3 volumes. The first volume is the Ultimate Road Trip, and it gets mailed to you as a CD with my own handmade artwork. The second is for 'Alternate Routes,' and the third is for 'Off-Road Trips'.

The rest of the tracks on this mix will be included in WFMU's USB drive full of mp3's from the Free Music Archive, one of many cool station-wide swag items. For some reason it says there'll be 100 mp3's on the jump drive. Well, we did the math and it turns out we can fit closer to 150 mp3s on a 2GB drive, so if you have any suggestions, we're all ears! Leave a comment here or in the forum to let us know about your favorite FMA find!

You can read more about the fundraising drive happening over at WFMU, the station that birthed the FMA, over at Marathon HQ. It runs thru March 13th. When pledging by phone or online or (especially during my show Thurs 9am-12n ET), tell 'em the FMA sent ya!

Dustin Wong flutters across the fretboard

Jitters, beauty, and blissed out guitar loop magic all converged on my radio program this week, when Baltimore musician Dustin Wong stopped by for a live set.

Scenes from Dustin's illustrious past include playing guitar in two of my favorite bands of recent years: high-energy spazzers Ponytail and intricate dualing guitar melodists Ecstatic Sunshine. That's one hell of a resume! Amazingly, Dustin's new solo material is equally fantastic as his work in other projects, and it even takes his talent in a new and exciting direction.

Dustin Wong's lovely new album of looped guitar orchestrations is called "Infinite Love: A Square Defining A Circle" (Thrill Jockey); it's a variety pack of sorts guaranteed to earn brownie points with any date, featuring two LPs/CDs entitled "Brother" and "Sister" (which start out the same, but then diverge), plus a DVD.

His performance on my radio show (excerpt below) mirrors the style on "Infinite Love." Layers are added to a simple theme and gradually, pauses are filled with playful harmonies, building a complex and beautiful piece that effortlessly transitions into the next idea. When Dustin performs live, you can almost see a miniature symphony of phantom guitars playing along above his shoulders.

Be sure to catch Dustin live in a city near you -- he's on tour with Avocado Happy Hour and Holy Ghost Party (both of Baltimore), playing everywhere from Vermont to California, and then coming back to the East coast again at the end of November. Tour dates/venues here. Also be sure to check out Dustin's bilingual (English/Japanese) blog. Baltimore music fetishists and those interested in the city's latest "soft music" scene, should swing by Bmore Musically Informed for tons of songs/photos/videos.

The archive of Dustin's full live set on WFMU is available as streaming audio here, along with a short interview.
