Ampeater Music BreakThru Radio Compilation: Liturgy, The Paparazzi, Megafaun, Kashka & more

Megafaun (photo via Ampeater)

Digital 7-inch blog Ampeater Music unleashes another 15-track mix featuring highlights from their vast catalog (119 releases to-date!). This mix was crafted for BreakThru Radio's 'Anatomy of a Blogger' program, which 'casted these tunes plus an interview with Ampeater's co-founder Ben Heller. He picked out a great mix, and I'm partial to NYC's so-dark-it's-light-black-metallers Liturgy, The Paparazzi's kitchen-sink pop jam, Toronto's show-stopping synth-popper Kat Burns (KASHKA), and the dynamic open-air folk of Megafaun.

Ampeater joined the FMA earlier this summer with a mix made especially for WFMU, featuring Cerberus Shoal, Little Women, Mount Eerie, Debo Band, Pistolera, Normal Love and more -- check it out here

White Suns, Bleak Sounds

I've written before about the annihilatory unifying power of slow-building doomy rock, the way that it suggests something utterly outside time and space, delivering unto the listening masses the kind of communion best thought of as shared obliteration of the senses. Of course when I say "obliteration" I mean it in the best possible way, which is why it sure is heartening to see that Brooklyn's WHITE SUNS have allowed their patented brand of damaged rock make its heavy celestial drift over to the Free Music Archive's skies. And I do mean heavy: these guys deal in the kind of metal netherworld in which squealing feedback meets up with slow, wholly sludged-out drumming to form a fractured, messy and yet completely enrapturing atmosphere, as exhilarating as any band that's ever stunned you with sheer audacity, as liturgical as any black mass you were ever warned about.

White Suns comes to us via Ampeater Music, whose contributions to the FMA are a huge boon to those of us looking for that new trailblazing sound, something a little extra-dimensional, shiny as a comet--check out their stacked-with-talent and exclusive compilation, you wanna see for yourself. But pay special attention to White Suns' Cavity, a release whose 20 minutes constitutes a ritual observance of nature's brutality, undertaken in the service of catharsis, a moment out of your day for serious worship. Consider it a religious injunction.

The Wave Pictures: Flawed Legends

The Wave Pictures are a perfect personification of youthful English mentality: self-deprecating, wittily ironic and in lust with America. With song titles like 'Now You Are Pregnant' and 'Dressing Up Like Snowmen', you can expect the lyrical content to waiver between tongue-in-cheek and downright crude. Their musical production may be classed as lo-fi, but with the addition of quirky trumpets and catchy chorus', you cannot help but fall in love with this three-piece.

Their digital 7" addition to the archive comes as a series from the Ampeater Music label, with tons of other great bands on, and even more on their way.
