Representing NYC is a new series of youth Hip – Hop records curated by Sam Hillmer. Representing NYC brings east Brooklyn youth together with indie producers who have moved to their neighborhoods. The first release features “The Fly Girlz” (Brownsville) paired with Excepter’s “Zebrablood” (Bedstuy). Through a broad network of CBOs, Brooklyn Public Schools, musicians, producers, labels, and other community figures and music professionals, Representing NYC is able to present these unlikely collaborations to the world. The aim is to create connections in the rapidly changing neighborhoods of east Brooklyn, and give youth a much-needed opportunity to represent their New York. Free of endorsements, manufactured beef, and subject matter prompted by corporate labels, we see New York through the lense of Hip-Hop on the street level, in the lunch-room, on the stoop, etc… At the moment our coalition includes DYCD, The Coalition of Hispanic Family Services, The Beacon Center for Arts and Leadership, Teen Action, LEAP, PS 284, IS 291, Bushwick Community High School, The Harbor School, Bonding Links, Sockets Cds, Wisdom Through Music Records, True Panther Sounds, Solid PR, and a growing number of artists, musicians, and producers whose contributions are too numerable to include here.
