- Maica Armata
- Johnny Paradise
Blending together an arresting mix of terrestrial samples, minimalist guitar, explosive drumming and raw vocals, Montreal duo Maica Mia conjures up girding space-balladry described as hearkening back to “minimalist psych-folk and the founding fathers of slowcore”. But it’s what the group adds to inspirational forebears such as Codeine, Low, and Zola Jesus that really has the ears of the city’s concertgoers perking up. Singer-songwriter Maica Armata brings a bold confessional flare to her songwriting, while drummer and programmer Jonny Paradise introduces a heavy droning undercurrent to the duo’s wall of sound.
Paradise and Armata have been playing together in Montreal with various ensembles for the past five years, before deciding to pursue a more intimate path together last year. The timing was right, and their droning, driven first album Sparcity Blues came quickly after that, self-released this past February as a (nearly sold out) limited-edition vinyl. That debut proved to be a closing of one chapter.,. Since then, Maica Mia has grown in leaps and bounds, becoming fiercer, louder, and more stultifying than ever before.
