Uncharted Territory, 1997

I love the '90s probably more than I love the '80s. That being said, just about the last thing I expected to discover in the Free Music Archive was music from the '90s: I was alive at the time, actively listening to music, reading 'zines, loitering at Rasputin Records and the Berkeley Square on weekends. I thought I had 1997 covered.

But apparently, there's this continent called Australia, and in 1997, some folks over there were releasing some purely strange and addictive sounds that didn't make it across the pond to the stomping ground of my youth. The Dual Plover label has uploaded a wealth of experimental audio to the FMA: dismantled dance tracks, harsh noise, deadpan no wave, slurring ballads, fractured rock, and other sounds from below down under.

I highly recommend taking a listen to Dual Plover's Rebirth of Fool Vol. 1 compilation, if only because it contains songs by bands with names like The Poo Touchers and Sports Bra. I'm a fan of tracks by The Jerker, Deano Marino, New Waver, Sabrina, Funky Terrorist, and Ostomy (who you can listen to below).

After that, dive into the rest of Dual Plover's catalogue, which features samples from new releases by Vialka, Naked on the Vague, and Kevin Blechdom, as well as some great older sounds.
