Spinnaface: He's got a Spinna for a Face and his Face is a Spinna
I'll readily admit that when I first heard of Spinnaface, I assumed it would be stupid. I mean, "he's got a spinna for a face and his face is a spinna"...sure, that phrase has got a ring to it, but what about the music? Nat Roe made the intro through his "Bad PR" series at WFMU's blog, where he reprinted the entire solicitation email in-full. Is this what it takes to get people to listen to music these days? Yeesh...
So then I actually listened, and it's damn good! Like an 80s vision of what dance music might sound like in the future, super-smooth liquid digital funk. Meanwhile Spinnaface is like this ridiculous party-loving Mickey Mouse character keeping the party going as long as that wheel's spinning. It's all kinda cheesy, but in an irresistibly fun way, part of a cohesive Spinnaface aesthetic that blurs the lines between between music and branding, between art and content.
The PDX-based Spinnaface swung by WFMU for a live jam on Marty McSorely's program, where we got to witness his full live setup: touch-screen, vocoder, and a chrome wheel spinnin' on face throughout bringin' smiles to the people.
Spinnaface also has two Creative Commons releases: 2008's Feel The Shine and 2010's Music For the People. Check out a couple of my favorite tracks below, and much more Spinnaface (including desktops, ridiculous videos, and Creative Commons-licensed remix stems for a few of these tracks) at his site.
