ATP-NY 2009: Circulatory System

Circulatory System live at ATP-NY'09, photo Creative Commons by napkinshoe (via flickr)

Touring with their first new album in eight years, Signal Morning, the System remain a definitive flagship for the elusive Elephant 6 Recording Company. Backing leader Will Cullen Hart's cubist psychedelia, the 2009 Circulatories include Hart's Olivia Tremor Control bandmates John Fernandes and Pete Erchick (Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't), drummer Derek Almstead (Elf Power and many others), cellist Heather McIntosh (The Instruments, Lil Wayne, Gnarls Barkley), newcomers Nesey Gallons and Charlie Johnston (63 Crayons), and the trusty E6 bass, tossed between everybody.

ATP-NY 2009: Akron/Family

Akron/Family live on the Ballroom stage at All Tomorrow's Parties 2009, held at Kutsher's in the Catskills, photographed by Irene Trudel
Known for their ever-modular, Dead-style song-suites, Akron/Family's All Tomorrow's Parties set offers a concise and ecstatic version of the 2009 model Akrons. Joined by auxiliary percussionists from the Caribou Vibration Ensemble, the Williamsburg/Williamsport trio build from invocatory psychedelic lulls through multi-sectioned beardo epics into free Afrodelic frenzy: a hippie tempest in Kutsher's low-ceilinged dining room. Hot jams, people. Hot jams.

This set originally aired on WFMU and was engineered by Richard Rusincovitch. For more highlights from WFMU's All Tomorrow's Parties broadcast, stay tuned to the FMA's ATP-NY-2009 collection. Thanks to ATP and Akron/Family

Akron/Family live improv on The Frow Show

The plans for Cobra-like cues and Oblique Strategies borne from the Love Room loft fell by the wayside, and very quickly Akron/Family shut off the lights in WFMU's Studio B. Literally stumbling in the dark between their usual instruments, upright and toy pianos, Farfisa organ, space blaster, Scott Williams' cigar box guitar, Bryce's accordion, and other toys, the trio jammed for an hour-and-a-half straight, reconnecting with the experimental investigations that run beneath their current incarnation's cosmic folk and Afrodelic dreaminess.

The set aired 5/11/09 on The Frow Show (check out WFMU's Playlist & Streaming Archive). Check out part 1 below and the Full Set HERE.

Engineered by Chris Koltay & Jeff Simmons 5/7/09

Akron/Family is currently touring in support of Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free, their new CD/2xLP on Dead Oceans
