Upitup Records (Curator)

Upitup has been releasing free music since 2003. Based in Rome, Stuttgart, and Liverpool, we initially just wanted to make our sounds accessible to the public. The aim was to create an open platform for sharing ideas and staying/getting in contact with people. We later realized we're running what's considered a netlabel.

Upitup remains completely uninfected by commercial interests - to the contrary, we love to see the music industry trying to catch up with new technologies while suffering from their self-imposed politics. We are proud to be able to supply our music for free.

The slogan "Up It Up!" can be comprehended as a battlecry of digital culture. Unless you "up something up to the network", it stays where it is, unshared (in your brain, on your pc etc.). To "up it up" equally means to "go for it", to "make it hot".

Still don't get it? See some photos of our live gigs.

Upitup welcomes Germanager: Smiles EP is out now

Germanager - Smiles - Out now on Upitup Records

Upitup Records (www.upitup.com) reawakes again to release this hidden gem of an album by Liverpool based multimedia artist Germanager aka Alex Germains.

"Smiles" is Upitup's free release cat number UPFREE66 and it's bloody entertaining!

Germains easily switches mood, tempos, turns the song around and magically mantains the pop and folk musicality while turning music upside down. The quality of the sounds and the catchy melodies have some sort of post/kraut-rock cum library music feel to them but, be aware, Germanager can bring you anywhere at anytime, without any advice.

This stuff is fresh, and highly original, we can't wait to give you more of his music soon.

Here are the release's sleeves note written by Christopher Taylor:

Whilst procrastinating over starting to write these words I googled Germanager. There's only one picture of him on google images, so I clicked on it and saw it was from his one review to date. It was not a positive one, and led to a protracted online debate where it was suggested the reviewer had missed the point. but this wasn't so surprising, Germanager's music can be as challenging and befuddling as it can be tautly beautiful, symphonic.

So I clicked on the pic and I saw in the suggested images another one of Germanager, but it appeared upside down for some reason. When I clicked it turned out it was his profile picture from his LinkdIn page, still upside down. Now let me tell you that's classic Germanager. Taking an everyday process that the majority of us zombie our way through and gently subverting it. Although it's upside down, the photograph shows a man with a subtle smile with no trace of smugness.

Yes he has a LinkdIn page. He has things to do. He gets out and about. But when he gets home he makes music. Sometimes for hours on end, sometimes a quick ten minutes before brekkie. That's just what he does. and all those everyday processes he plucks out whilst navigating round our modern life make their way into the music. gently dissected, digested and subverted. Being beautifully unsettled can be very soothing, especially in times such as these.

It's great he's sharing it with you.

P.P. Roy 2nd album set for an August release on Upitup!

P.P. Roy second album and third official release ever, Watch The Dough Nut Not The Hole is set for release on Upitup Records on the 18 August 2014.

His first 2 releases on Rephlex Records, were amongst the most obscure and timeless records on the legendary Cornish label. His love for crate digging is felt throughout all of his music and is still present on this album. We warn you tho, Watch The Dough Nut Not The Hole is highly addictive!
