About White Market Podcast

I’ve been building a music collection on Free Music Archive since 2012. At that time, White Market was still Programa Marca Branca*, and it was a Portuguese radio show. In three years, however, life couldn't have changed any more than it did. I moved countries twice, Marca Branca had to go on hold and inevitably, when I tried to revive it, the show had to go through a deep, deep change - the Portuguese language was replaced with English and White Market was born. It wasn't an easy process, and for a while I even thought I wouldn't really be able to keep doing it. And, again, life changed and White Market is now making its way through the British airwaves, going live every Sunday at 8pm (GMT) on Spark Sunderland, a community radio station developed and run by the University of Sunderland.
After a few shows have been on air, I decided to challenge myself to update White Market's collection here on Free Music Archive on a weekly basis. Like I explained in our own blog, the music you'll find in our collection is not exclusive. You will be able to find it available for download in other places of the Internet and that is basically why I can upload it: because everything is published under a Creative Commons licence. While the usage permissions change according to the licence chosen by the artist, they all allow sharing. With this in mind, my role here is strictly the curator’s one: I search, select and upload songs that are not yet available on FMA, making your search for good free music just a tiny bit easier.
With this in mind, I'm glad to tell you that we have recently uploaded three new records, all very different.
Published in 2008 by now extinct aerotone netlabel, the album is a collection of remixes from Norton's second record, Kersche. Even though they sing in English, Norton are one of the most well-succeeded Portuguese indie rock/alternative pop bands. If you're into smooth synths and a chorus to sing-a-long,this one is for you.
Between hip-hop instrumentals and ambient electronic music, Darksunn's MELANGE is not your average beats album. It is an intricate exercise of mind over matter, in which sounds offers us a deeper perspective on emotional landscapes. It's the future of beats, some say; carefully tailored by hands with more than 15 years of production experience.
A Minha Embala was a project by Aline Frazão (vocals, guitar) and César Herranz (western concert flute, percussion). It was meant as a meeting between the various musical expressions of different Portuguese-speaking countries. They move their work between the musical universes of Angola, Cape Verde, Brazil, Portugal and Galicia, singing not only in Portuguese, but also in Portuguese-based creole languages, kimbundu and umbundu. Their record was released through Jamendo in 2011 and is a delight for those who love bossa-nova, morna and other mellow tropical genres.
*Between 2008 and 2013, Programa Marca Branca was the only regular Portuguese radio show exclusively dedicated to netaudio and free culture, with weekly podcasts and features about this digital universe. The show was brodcast on five different radio stations in Portugal and Spain. The project had to go on hold at the end of 2013.
