Whats a name?

Very exciting release this week, as we bring you TCTD's first FMA exclusive, 20k9d by Starpause. Starpause is one of a few dozen pseudonyms by San Francisco based artist Jordan Gray. An early voice  out of the scene surrounding the Game Boy music sequencer, Little Sound DJ, Gray hit the ground running in organizing the highly influential Colin Pipe Crew in Minnesota, and later the DutyCycle series of shows in San Francisco. He also puts out tons of other peoples audio, both on his mp3death label, and on the truly open source hexawe netlabel for the littlegptracker program (where you can even download the samples and sequence data for each single). All of this vociferous scene involvement does nothing, however, to overshadow his tremendous musical talent.

These early tracks, collected from various no-fi and lowbit labels (the earliest being released in low enough quality to support the tiny free hosting restrictions of early free Internet sites) are now re-recorded in higher glorious stereophonic sound. Gray came to the Nintendo Game Boy not because of a fascination with 8bit sounds as much as his love of a powerful pocket synthesizer for rocking the party on the fly. His music reflects this, showing he has more in common with lurching jangly techno beasts than with mario bros. rave cliches, and it allows him to float seamlessly through multiple worlds. Surpremely weird, yet danceable, he is a energetic and lively performer, which those on the east coast have a chance to catch this weekend at Philidelphia's 8static event. In the meantime, enjoy this recording, and see you guys next week.
